Argos

A brief history:

Argos was founded in July 1973, as a rebrand of the Green Shield Stamps catalogue shops. The first store opened in Canterbury in late 1973. Argos was later purchased by BAT Industries in 1979, but was then demerged in 1990, before being acquired by GUS plc in 1998. It is currently part of Home Retail Group, after being demerged from parent company GUS plc.

Two main catalogues are published each year (a Spring/Summer catalogue in January and an Autumn/Winter catalogue in July), as well as a smaller Christmas catalogue that is published in October. Although, historically, the catalogue has been the primary method to attract customers to stores to purchase, this has changed over recent years with the growth in Internet sales, which now account for over a quarter of all turnover.
