Betterware A brief history:

Betterware’s roots go back to 1928 in Romford in the East end of London. Edward Willis and Albert Clark decided that they would be able to make more money by selling their bushes door-to-door, and Betterwear Brushes, as the business was then known, began life. The two men had heard about the success of the Fuller Brush Company in the US, and set about trying to make the idea work in the UK. By the early 1930s Willis and Clark had set up a factory in Romford, and had rebranded as Betterware Products, to reflect the fact that it was not just brushes, but other household goods, that were on offer.

After the war many returning servicemen took up roles as salesmen, and the brand continued to develop. However, the late 1970s and early 1980s were difficult times and the company went into receivership. The brand name, which by now had morphed into Betterware, was picked up, and the company experienced its most significant period of growth in the mid 1980s, at which time the first catalogue was produced. Sales increased from £2m in 1983 to £5m in 1986, and the company was floated on the stock market in 1986. The Betterware product range is now also available online, and continues to be a housewife’s favourite.
