Freemans

A brief history:

Freemans was founded in 1905, in Clapham, South London, and originally sold made-to-measure suits. By 1932, Freemans had become the largest mail order company in Britain, and had a network of 30,000 agents. The business continued to flourish, particularly after the Second World War, and served millions of customers, via an agent network for the remainder of the 20th Century. The success of the network of agents continued to be a major driving factor in the growth of the business, along with the benefit that customers were able to pay on credit.

In 1988, Freemans was bought out by the Sears group. The Sears group, which was taken over by retail entrepreneur Philip Green in early 1999, then sold Freemans to the Otto Versand group just a few months later. Otto Versand is a large, privately owned, mail order company based in Hamburg, Germany. Freemans, along with sister catalogue Grattan, is now part of the Otto subsidiary Freeman Grattan Holdings.

As is traditional for several of the traditional ‘big book’ mail order companies, Freemans still issues two main catalogues each year for the Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter seasons. However, the growth of online sales has gradually reduced the impact of traditional paper catalogues.
