Screwfix began life as the Woodscrew Supply Company in 1979, based in Yeovil Somerset. Unsurprisingly, the business initially sold screws and their first
catalogue was merely a one page leaflet. This was expanded to a four page booklet in 1987, under the name Handimail, and other hardware items were also included. Screwfix Direct came into being in 1992, and a period of strong growth began in 1994 with a move to new larger premises at Pen Mill, Yeovil. In the four years leading up to 1998, the company had continued to grow, virtually doubling turnover each year, and as a result moved to new premises at Yeovil's Houndstone business park. The first web presence for the brand was in 1999, and later that year the brand was acquired by Kingfisher plc., which also owns and operates the B&Q store chain.

A dedicated clearance section on the Screwfix website includes a variety of items, grouped by product category, which have been reduced in price.
Screwfix offer free standard next working day delivery for orders over £50 that are made before 6pm. Otherwise, standard delivery costs £5, although there are further options to pay a £5 supplement to receive an order before noon, or a £10 supplement to receive an order before 10:30am. Items can be returned within 30 days by contacting customer services by email or by telephone to arrange collection.
