Woolworths A brief history:

Woolworths began life in the USA in 1879 as a household goods store, which traded under the name of the 'FW Woolworth Company.' In many ways, it was the forerunner of modern day pound stores, as goods were priced at either 5 cents or 10 cents. The original idea was so successful, that in 1909 the founder, Frank Woolworth decided to try and transfer the concept to the other side of the Atlantic, and hence the first ever Woolworths store in the UK was opened in Church Street, Liverpool.

The first UK store was an instant success, and as a result more stores were opened in many major cities across the UK, resulting in a chain of forty stores just a few years later at the outbreak of World War I. During the inter-war period the Woolworths chain continued to grow rapidly in the UK, on the back of consumer demand, often backed by requests from local councils. Woolworths continued to be a strong presence on the UK's high streets throughout the remainder of the 20th century, but changes began to take place as we entered the recession of the early 1980s. In 1982, Paternoster Stores Ltd, which was later to become known as Kingfisher plc, acquired Woolworths UK operations, but by 2001 the business was demerged, and became Woolworths plc.

The early years of the 21st century were not kind to Woolworths, which struggled to adapt to a more competitive retail environment, with increased competition in particular from Supermarket chains and also the rise in online shopping. In late 2008, the company went into administration, and just a few months later, with no viable rescue options, Woolworths ceased to exist on the UK's high streets, as all 800+ stores were closed. The brand, however, was rescued by the Shop Direct group who acquired the Woolworths name, as well as some other recognised brands, including Ladybird children's clothing. Woolworths was then reborn as an online store.
